No school because of H1N1!

All your common sense are belong to teh pigz!

You have no chance to survive make your time. Ha Ha Ha…

The Mauritian government has recently announced(WARNING: French language! :P) that all schools will be closed starting from today (21 August) to the 30th of August. The reason is because of the H1N1 flu virus, commonly called Swine Flu, Mexican Flu or Stig Flu. ;-)

As a student and as a practicing Muslim, I’m happy that there won’t be school during the following week. I’ll have some time to relax (and possibly revise) before the Form 5 exams in some months and the sacred month of Ramadan (in which us Muslims observe the fast) probably starts on Saturday.

Too much, too late?

As a human being with a (mostly) functional brain, I’m not so happy. I can’t help but feel the Mauritian government has either taken this decision too late or simply shouldn’t have taken it.

I could write a whole article about why I think it’s a bad decision, but I won’t. It’s a highly controversial subject and there has already been much discussion about it on other Mauritian blogs. I generally agree with Bruno on this topic.

Yes, precautions must definitely be taken but the Mauritian people are just being pessimistic and paranoid about this. Ok,  it’s an epidemic and people are dying. Much more people also die from several other diseases everyday, right? That’s my point. No need to be paranoid.

P.s. For those who didn’t understand the picture or the caption, there’s always Wikipedia.

Your views on topic the are welcome. However, please take into consideration that my mind is already made about the subject.

Pareil kuma kan ena cyclone classe 2/3 lekol fermer. LOL
  • He is back!
    yes!!! Its him!
  • Agree. the virus is still gonna be here when they re-open school.. So unless schools are closed for like a month, it won't serve any real use. and it's not even because the contagion has reached uncontrollable levels that they took this decision; it's because of absenteism percentage (which is obviously not the flu-sick %). if everyone had taken their responsibilities and precautions, i'ld be at school completing my course syllabus. and as someone mentionned, it's a flu, ppl will get it; the authorities just had to educate ppl on how to medicate themselves, get better, not contaminate others and go back to life.
  • That's what many persons haven't understood yet, it is not a normal flu.. it kills.
Normal flu kills duno how many persons each year .. but those are not cases in MAuritius .. it is in Africa .. where the same number of people die of diarrhea.. in Mauritius people do not die of diarrhea nor of Flu !! ..
  • Your comment perfectly sums up the situation, I don't think much more can be said. :)
  • I haven't been keeping abreast of facts, and the Mauritian newspapers online are absolute shit, but does anyone know how many kids have been infected?
  • govt has stopped releasing figures and will only report to WHO now. we'll only know unofficial numbers now via ppl inside public hospitals.
  • Brilliant!!!! :-/

In my opinion(just like you said), revisions should be encouraged. the good thing is that "the tv will be flooded by educational shows". Atleast, one good point. but i don't really agree with the "new thing of distributing homeworks" which is going to propagate swine flu even more!!
As for absentism during the previous days, it's an over-reaction/over-cinema by Mauritian students: I say only 1/4 of them are really ill. And now the result, one week holiday. what about syllabusss mann??? We have exams!!!
have a nice holiday anyway :)

I believe you should sell masks (paper mache FTW!) @ Rs. 50 each :P
  • Thanks for the link to my article :D I'm happy I have not been lynched after writing this post, lol ... well I've not been lynched yet, mais 2 3 fanatik finn cowardly anonymously comment ... enfin ...

My opinion is: this is a flu virus, ki ou faire, dimoun pou trap li sa. I do not understand why they closed down the schools. People are going to get it. They'd better get it NOW, parski si zot attan, virus la pa pou attan zot pou muter li, ek li vinn plis violent kan li muter, 1000 fois fini gagne li ek develop zot defense ek virus la kan li encore faible
  • Bruno - i have seen the interview on France 24 and the discussion on C dans l'air .. on tv5monde.. doing a flu party and catching it is the worst of ideas.. knowing 1 on 1000 will die of it.. you wouldn't want to take the risk of being that one unlucky person.. So, why would anyone accept to be that ONE lucky person. It is better to remain at home and safe, specially some fragile persons who are prone to catching viruses .. and children.

  • You were right, you have definitely pissed me off now :P

I find your views quite contradictory though, do you think it's too late and therefore that the decision is good but should have been taken earlier, or do you think it shouldn't have been taken at all at any time?
  • Sorry, I wasn't clear enough. I think that if the decision had been taken earlier, it could've been a good thing, but now it's too late to be effective. I hope I don't seem contradictory now.
  • hmm.. nice article... as i said also .. the schools should av been closed earlier to stop the risk of propagation .. and somewhere it is better late than never..
    :)
  • Nav
I wouldn't say it's "too late"...but it is late. The contagious nature of the virus means that early action should have been taken. On the bright side, most students will welcome there being no school i'm sure :D
