5 Reasons Why the New Mauritius Logo and Branding Sucks

I was rather disappointed when I read about the new Mauritius Logo [French Article] and branding that’s supposed to promote tourism in my country. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw my comment in today’s newspaper (Thanks Guillaume Gouges). ;)

Although I appreciate the effort my beloved government (that’s a tongue-in-cheek statement, of course)  is doing, I can’t help but feel that this expensive campaign is going to fail. Call me pessimistic, but I do have some valid points; here are 5 reasons why it sucks (in no particular order):

1. It’s too complicated

Maurifail

When I first saw it, I was like: “What the heck is this, an advertisement for the carnival of Rio de Janeiro? What does it symbolize? OK, the M is some kind of Mountain…oh wait…it’s Pieter Both!! I’m *so* smart.”

Seriously, this logo doesn’t mean a thing for people who have never been to Mauritius. The Yellow T is what? A mermaid trying to embrace people? Someone dancing the Séga? We may never know. The only thing vaguely symbolising Mauritius is the blue line under “ius” which seems to be the sea. Moreover, people who have never heard of the island will be wondering what “Mauvitius” is because the letters are so badly syled. :P

2. Pieter Both

What’s better?

This:

…or this:

2064201005_77affc58b0_b

Do you see my point? For those who don’t know, the first picture is the Pieter Both mountain, the second is the Mauritian sea. Would you know that they are barely 20 kilometres from each other?

First of all, who was Pieter Both?

This guy:

225px-Pieter_Both

No, that’s not William Shakespeare’s brother. Pieter Both was the first Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies. He was given 4 ships to come to Mauritius and drowned before even setting foot on the Island in the year 1614. The Dutchmen, who were the owners  of the Island at that time, were probably feeling bored and decided to name a mountain (the one above) after the guy. More on Wikipedia.

Basing your tourism campaign on a mountain named after a rich Dutch dude nobody knows a lot about who died before even visiting the island 4 centuries ago ? How clever.

Come on, Mauritius has always been the Island of the 3 S’s: Sea, Sun and Sand. Why couldn’t they base the campaign on that? If someone wants to visit Mauritius, he’ll probably do it because of the Sea and the amazing beaches. Not because of a mountain nobody really cares about.

3. Not obeying the basic principles of logo design.

As David Airey, a prominent logo designer, says in a very good article:

Five elements that can be seen in every iconic logo:

  1. It’s describable
  2. It’s memorable
  3. It’s effective without colour
  4. It’s scalable i.e. works when just an inch in size
  5. It’s appropriate

The logo obeys none of these rules, it’s:

  1. Not describable.
  2. Definitely not memorable.
  3. Even the little symbolism in it is lost when it’s used without colour:
  4. logoblk

  5. Not scalable:
  6. logoscl

  7. Not appropriate, as I said in the previous point.

…which brings us to the next point:

4. Unable to challenge competitors even with the high price.

It’s a big, bad world and everybody wants to make money. People are willing to dedicate their time and money to advertise their products, however, I don’t think the people at the Tourism Authority are among those. From the same article I mentioned above, David Airey says: “Lastly, the design must be appropriate for the business it identifies. This is accomplished through in-depth research into the industry involved, and helps to differentiate from closely associated competitors.”

Look at some of the potential competitors’ logos:

design_bahamaslogoMaldivesincredibleinsafricaaustralia

TIDCO-Logogreece

From an advertising viewpoint, we stand no chance against these great campaigns. Absolutely no chance.

How much did we pay for that crap? Rs. 31 Millions.

5. Using two different languages.

As the slogan is: Mauritius – c’est un plasir.

Notice something wrong? In my opinion, using two languages is wrong. It should be “Mauritius – It’s a pleasure” or “Ile Maurice – C’est un plaisir”. The people who are in charge are either too stupid to realise the world isn’t trilingual or don’t really give a damn about the campaign. The best choice would be “Mauritius – It’s a pleasure” since the main language of the planet is English. Another interesting option would be to use two different logos for English-speaking and French-speaking countries.

Conclusion

I honestly think that the Government could have done much better. I know Mauritius is not a nation of Picassos and Michelangelos, but there are many excellent graphic designers here. They should have used national talent instead of hiring an English company to do the work. All in all, I — as a geek— would describe the logo and branding as an Epic Fail (i.e. It’s just awful).

Here’s how I would have designed the logo:

mrulogo

I think it’s not that good because I’m not (yet?) a professional designer and I designed it in half an hour. I don’t know if you people will like it or not.

So, what do you people think about the new advertising campaign? Love it or hate it? Leave your thoughts in the comments below. :)

Hey there. As an American who got to your blog through a convoluted series of clicks starting with installing Firefox in 2007, the logo for Mauritius is not good at all! Beaches attract me, sun I like even though it is horrible for my skin, and warm seawater is always a joy, especially near the cold Pacific Ocean. I love yours!
  • I like your article. :) Specially the historical touch you have brought into it. I was taken along with those who really did not like the branding and thought it a bad joke.
However, that phase is over and I believe it is time we accept the branding as it is and as Mauritian citizens we should try to use this branding in the best way we can. Cause after all, I can say it is not all that bad. It really depends on the way the message is delivered. We must now learn to say 'Mauritius - C'est un Plaisir' so that it is received in the way it was intended to. We have to work on ways to properly do that.
Let's not put all the blame on the Government for this. I believe that a foreign company was sought out so as to give the best branding for Mauritius, specially in this time of recession, and trusted Acanchi to do a good job (which we all agreed it didnt). So Acanchi didn't deliver the goods...The Government erred in not trusting our own designers. But believe me, even if a Mauritian Designer was selected, disagreements would still be here. Why designer X and not designer Y? *fooof*

  • I know...I'm subscribed to your blog since some time. ;) I guess what you're saying is right; the government just doesn't care if we like it or not, 'C'est un plaisir" is here to stay. Better adapt than perish. :)

Your logo is wonderful as compared to the experts! so do your lovely article.
    keep it up!

Hi, I'm currently writing a dissertation on the effects of country-branding and investment and I think that your comments are pertinent to my research. Do you mind if I use them?
  • I'll be glad if you do you so. I don't even mind if you credit me or not. :)
  • Mauritian
SEa sun Sand.....all competitors of mauritius are proposing that!!!!
  • My point is that no competitors are using the tagline. You could also say that most of India's competitors are 'Incredible', but they aren't calling themselves 'Incredible Australia' or 'Incredible Bangladesh', so India can use 'Incredible India'.

Flawed logic, if you ask me. :)
  • Great post. Superb argument. Excellent design --- yours is way better.
  • David Barbea
    rien à dire,
tu as tout à fait raison.
    bravo!!!
  • Kosso
yours sucks too...but as you said, you designed it half an hour ago, and you were not paid 31 million rupees...meaning, anyone could have designed that crap, even my 5 year old cousin (if I had one)...It's a f***ing disgrace...creative people should work on those kind of things, not politicians...
  • Jean-Lou
To lartik seryé me to logo mari matt! Ena tou bann lakinn ki to finn mansione dan to lartik... me kouma to dir to pa enn designer, mo dakor la ossi ek twa :-)

Barring the issue of design, it is the brand which is most is most important. the money is not really paid for the logo but for the brand. Mauritius- C'est un plaisir actually talks to me. I like it but i might be biased because from my eye the design ranks second in importance. i would definitely see a corrobation between mauritius and pleasure. Being a long haul destination its not easy to attract people here. We can attract people here if we get an attractive message and I am attracted to pleasure.
  • The Original logo is kiddish. I mean, my 10 year old brother could make one like that.
  • Name
Great post. I enjoyed reading it.
Your logo is better according to me- another "geek" or just intelligent Mauritian.
However, people not knowing what or who Mauritius is, wont decode your coconut tree as being an 'T'. Looks more like an 'L'. So it would read: Maurilius.
The colours are much brigher and more appropriate (Balanced and in the correct order- of our national flag).
The Sea Sun Sand Theme is good tough.
The Peter Both thing didn't fit in, neither did the 'T' thing on the original logo.
You should send a copy of your post to the government.
  • Thanks for the kind words. :)
The government would never accept a post from a 16 year old guy who's criticising them, they're too busy wasting their money on stupid projects. ;)
  • safaraz
Fiona Gilmore & Acanchi suck, man. Ya, stink; n suck $1m! Damned maurisious with vicious PMSD new era! U gud 2 post in comments of David Airey's branding principle.

Do u no zat Acanchi Ltd liable 2 prosecution? Acanchi has pliagated the logo and brand (read Sen Ramsamy in Forum in Le Mauricien 14/10/09).

Foreign experts/consultants take ur frog n flog it on 2 u. Ow insultant ziz kon-sultant!
  • blackorchidas
yeah the new one sucks, yours is much better
  • Kam
Definitely, the logo's not good. The ideas in your logo are acceptable but still there's lots to do to come up with something concrete.

    A big deception! :(

    Nice post though...
  • Pieter Both = Muryaaaaaaa Pahar

You are right, the new Mauritius Logo(If I can call that a Logo, because it looks more some comic fonts to me) SuCks. They should have left an open competition and designers like you could design their own logo. Nice and Informative post btw; if only it could reach the ear of Navin :P
  • Akash
Your logo, without irony, is a masterpiece... Simplicity, clarity, impact!
31 million rupees for that official but undescribable "griboullis" is such an enormous waste of resources!
  • jevin
Basing your tourism campaign on a mountain named after a rich Dutch dude nobody knows a lot about who died before even visiting the island 4 centuries ago ?

    Haha that's funny. ;)
  • You said it all lol...

C'est vrai qu'ils auraient pu faire davantage d'effort pour ce logo qui est censé représenté toutes les facettes de notre chère île...
  • Nav
The logo definitely doesn't work. It looks like something that's been created 1 hour before the deadline. A big waste of money. I think i can do better, in fact, i will design one myself!
  • logo australie tip top! Sa logo!!! Moi mo dir ti bisin mette ene dodo ek bane lespece rayons rouge bleu jeune vert p traverse li...apres ler la slogan dir Mauritius..totally yours. ^^ hinhih
  • Nice post, u said it all!
  • lolz.. that one is simply huge :) nice historical back up .. Nice use of articles..

    Very Very good article ..

While looking at the logo .. i thought i would prolly do better than that .. lolz..
But seen i didn't have time and u did the logo..

The acanchis don't know a heck about mauritius .. so probably , they don't care a damn .. they just gave some persons who came there for summer jobs to do it !! :S

Pieter both .. that's the lamest stuff iv come about !! .. man !! Who care about peter both in mauritius ! lol !!

if they wanted to show something else than beach of Mauritius .. thers the trekking .. they could have had a nice view of the side slope of the le pouce mountain .. that's scary or even of the 7 cascades .. or a VIDEO !! why not a video !! lolzz.. a short clip !!

To finish .. with the Logo which should have been somewhat instead of focusing on satisfying the communal divides .. to concentrate on the tourist fact .. bleu, azure .. pied coco and relaxation feeling ..
  • "to concentrate on the tourist fact .. bleu, azure .. pied coco and relaxation feeling .." - I like that sentence. I think that's what the aim should be. :)
  • I prefer your logo to theirs.

In semiotic parlance, the logo fails - no foreigner can match the dot to Pieter Both.

I wish all "designers" would study the field of semiotics before proclaiming themselves as "pros."

I'd have gone with half sun and half ravanne, some blue tilde characters to represent the sea, and a "Mauritius" in a 'readable' font.[the 't' can be a coconut tree.] It would have meant something to foreigners.

Anyway, rock on, sjdvdda and ace @ those exams. :)
  • Voted. It sucks. lol. And Rs 31000000 it sucks further.
  • Tom
I prefer yours! great post though!
